While the New Plymouth CBD will be buzzing with roaring V8s and classic cars this Americarna, we reckon the loudest rumble will be coming from the tracks. Steam Incorporated is bringing the “Big Red Train” back to Taranaki, and for local families, the Saturday shuttle runs to Lepperton is the ultimate weekend treat.
On Saturday 28 February amidst the chaos and colour of AmeriCARnival in the New Plymouth CBD, families have a rare chance to step back in time. Committing to a full-day excursion can be tough with little ones. Short, sweet and spectacular, the Lepperton Shuttle runs one-hour round trips. It’s the perfect bite-sized adventure – long enough to experience the magic of the rails, but short enough to keep the kids entertained from start to finish.
You’ll depart right from the Wind Wand, leaving the Tasman Sea behind as the train winds through the suburbs of East End and Fitzroy. The track then curves inland to Lepperton, where it meets the Waitara branch line. Here, the drivers swap ends, giving everyone a great chance to spot Maunga Taranaki before the train heads back to the coast.
Because the train departs right next to the action at Puke Ariki Landing, it’s easy to build a full family day out. Before or after your 1-hour train ride, you can explore AmeriCARnival’s free family activities, including the new Tractor Edition showcase, world-class Timber Sports on Egmont St, and the interactive “Rescue” exhibition inside Puke Ariki.
Departure Times (Saturday 28 Feb):
- 10:10 am
- 11:15 am
- 12:20 pm
