44 year old man charged with murder following incident in New Plymouth CBD yesterday

A homicide investigation is under way after the death of a man in New Plymouth last night.

Emergency services were called to St Aubyn Street shortly before 7pm following a report of an altercation.

On arrival, they found a man with critical injuries. CPR was performed, but he died at the scene.

Two people were arrested following the incident. A 44-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear today in the New Plymouth District Court. The second person was released without charge.

A scene guard remained in place overnight and cordons will stay in place today while a scene examination is completed. Part of St Aubyn Street remains closed this morning, and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or expect delays.

Police are asking to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about those involved.
