NZTA advises that roadworkers have done a great job clearing slips and restoring access to state highways across the regional boundary between Taranaki and Waikato following this week’s heavy rainfall.
SH3 Awakino between Mokau and Piopio has re-opened today at 3pm today (Friday 17 October), while SH4 between Eight Mile Junction (the intersection between SH3 and SH4) and Taumarunui and SH43 between Whangamōmona and Taumarunui will also re-open today at around 5pm.
Temporary speed limits will be in place on these highways over the weekend, with multiple sites under stop/go traffic controls Monday to Friday while repairs are completed. Repairs are expected to take 2–3 weeks.

NZTA further advises motorists to plan for additional travel times of approximately 40–60 minutes in this area, so only travel iif it’s absolutely necessary.
More rain is expected across parts of the region in the coming week. Slips and other hazards can occur without warning. Travel carefully and follow all temporary traffic management.
